Life Learning Center

April 2, 2021 By Aaron Young

Started in 2006 as a small non-profit that focused on the “root causes” of poverty, Life Learning Center (LLC) has transitioned into so much more today. In 2021, LLC is one of only eleven designated Recovery Community Centers in the Commonwealth of Kentucky that links individuals in recovery to various services, including employment support, mutual aid groups, counseling, and networking with others from the recovery community. Additionally, LLC delivers a holistic integrated continuum of education and care facilitating transformational change, long term employment, and dignity for the “at risk” citizens of Northern Kentucky.

LLC offers a wide selection of enhanced programming and services to include peer support led weekly recovery groups including recovery roundtables, 12-step mutual aid groups, one-on-one peer support, LLC’s 12-week intensive life skills program with expanded offering on weekends, Quick Response Team Interventions accompanied by overdose reversal medications training as well as holiday fellowships, monthly recovery recreational events, and quarterly recovery celebrations.

The Foundations for a Better Life™ 12-week program focuses on addressing five life domains: physical, financial, spiritual, emotional, and relational. These on-going barriers often derive from the addiction epidemic, increased incarceration, and childhood poverty rates rising in our local tri-state area.
Our program is open to the public and serves those involved in the criminal justice system.

Every Tuesday, 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, individuals can join Medication-Assisted Recovery Anonymous or a MARA meeting. This is a gathering of people united by their desire to recover from their addictions and recognize the value of anti-craving medications like methadone and buprenorphine as a tool toward sobriety. MARA is a 12-step program adapted from the Alcoholics Anonymous format. Evidence shows the use of prescribed methadone and buprenorphine, when combined with psychosocial treatments like peer support and talk therapy, is undeniably the most effective treatment for opioid use disorder. Research has repeatedly shown that these medications reduce opioid addiction¬–related deaths by 50% or more, increase treatment retention, and decrease infectious disease transmission and criminal activity.

On Wednesdays, from 6:30 pm to 7:00 pm, individuals can join a SMART support group, which stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. SMART, founded in 1994, is based on scientific methods, emphasizing self-empowerment, cognitive-behavioral techniques, and coping with cravings. Rather than focusing on alcohol use as the only issue, SMART practices are meant to help resolve the addiction’s underlying issues. SMART Recovery is a non-profit organization emphasizing four points: 1) Building Motivation, 2) Coping with Urges, 3) Problem Solving, and 4) Lifestyle Balance. The SMART Recovery approach appreciates that individuals experience substance use differently, and that the definition of “recovery” is as unique as the individual. In the same light, the SMART Recovery approach appreciates individuals’ innate power to change their behavior with the right tools. As such, SMART Recovery builds upon individuals’ strengths and through cognitive-behavioral techniques, gives people the tools to build upon those strengths to achieve their goals.

Additionally, LLC offers a SMART Recovery support group for family and friends of people with substance addiction. The addictive behavior of someone close can have an enormous impact on a person’s well-being. The program invites participants to spend some time concentrating on themselves and their goals, an area they may have been neglecting for some time. SMART Family & Friends group meets every Wednesday from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

On Thursdays, Life Learning Center continues to hold a traditional Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

As a Recovery Community Center in Northern Kentucky, Life Learning Center stands with its doors open as a center for the recovery community with employment support, mutual aid groups, counseling, and networking.
