Recovery Community Organizations (RCO)

A Recovery Community Organization (RCO) is a nonprofit organization led and governed by representatives of the local communities of recovery. RCOs work to strengthen recovery support systems, build community, reduce stigma, and advocate for policies and resources that support long-term recovery.

Many RCOs provide:

  • Peer support services
  • Advocacy and public education
  • Leadership development
  • Recovery events and community engagement
  • Training and technical assistance
  • Harm reduction education and outreach
  • Recovery Community Centers and peer-led spaces
  • Resource navigation and recovery support programs

Recovery Community Organizations are rooted in the belief that people with lived experience should have a voice in shaping the systems, policies, and services that impact their lives.

RCOs vs RCCs

Recovery Community Centers (RCC) are often physical spaces where people gather for support and connection, RCOs are the organizations that help coordinate, sustain, and expand recovery support services throughout a community or region.

What is an RCC?

A Recovery Community Center (RCC) is a welcoming, peer-driven space where people seeking or sustaining recovery can find connection, support, resources, and hope. RCCs are built on the belief that recovery is possible for everyone and that community plays a vital role in healing and wellness.

Recovery Community Centers are designed to meet people where they are, whether someone is newly exploring recovery, navigating challenges in their recovery journey, supporting a loved one, or looking to strengthen long-term recovery. RCCs provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals can build meaningful relationships, access resources, and discover pathways that work for them.

Unlike clinical treatment programs, RCCs are rooted in peer support and community connection. Many staff and volunteers have lived experience with recovery themselves and understand the importance of compassion, dignity, and belonging.

RCCs often support multiple pathways to recovery, recognizing that recovery looks different for every person. This may include abstinence-based recovery, medication-assisted recovery, harm reduction approaches, faith-based recovery, holistic wellness practices, and other pathways chosen by the individual. While some RCCs partner closely with treatment providers and healthcare organizations, their primary role is to provide peer support, community connection, and ongoing recovery support outside of clinical settings.

Services You May Find at an RCC

Services vary by location and community needs.

Why Recovery Community Centers Matter

Recovery can be isolating,  especially in communities where stigma, lack of resources, or limited support create barriers to healing. RCCs help bridge those gaps by creating spaces where people feel seen, valued, and supported.

Research continues to show that connection and peer support improve recovery outcomes, increase hope, reduce isolation, and strengthen long-term wellness. Recovery Community Centers help people build recovery capital; the internal and external resources needed to sustain recovery and improve quality of life.

Just as importantly, RCCs help communities grow stronger by promoting understanding, reducing stigma, and empowering people with lived experience to become leaders and advocates.

Recovery Happens in Community

At their core, Recovery Community Centers are about belonging. They are places where people can show up exactly as they are, find support without judgment, and discover that they do not have to navigate recovery alone.

Whether someone is seeking help for the first time, supporting a loved one, or celebrating years of recovery, RCCs exist to remind people that recovery is real, possible, and worth investing in.
